On 26 August 2026, Q-Neko organized a joint workshop with IEC/ISO JTC 3A WG2, connecting EU, Japan and the broader global quantum ecosystem. 57 participants from around the globe gathered together to share achievements and current status of Quantum-HPC computing infrastructures and technologies, to exchange views between the R&D and standardization communities, and to discuss benchmarking, pre-standardization and future standardization activities.

Future directions for Quantum-HPC standardization

The core aim of the workshop was to identify joint challenges and future directions for Quantum-HPC standardization via presentations of concrete research activities and use cases. The rapid evolution of quantum technologies was highlighted as one of the main challenges, showing how important it is to find a balance between advancing pre-standardization activities while still preserving innovation.

Another major topic was the role of diverse hybrid HPC and quantum computing infrastructures and how developing a common terminology, reference models and architecture descriptions is vital for standardization efforts. The workshop also identified common benchmarking and interoperability challenges, recommending the establishment of common practical and real-world benchmarking methodologies and improving hardware- and vendor-independent integration frameworks to avoid fragmentation.

Q-Neko supports the definition of future international standards

Q-Neko contributed to the workshop by presenting its ongoing work on reliable hybrid infrastructures and providing various research highlights, including algorithm development in Q-Neko’s various target application areas, hybrid software stack and integration, real-world benchmarks for hybrid workflows, and evidence-based contributions to pre-standardization activities.

Close cooperation between research projects and standards organizations was seen as key to bridging the gap between R&D and standardization activities. As an international collaboration initiative implementing practical research on hybrid infrastructures, the workshop confirmed the importance of Q-Neko’s role in supporting future international standards.
